Low Calorie Hot Chocolate
My low calorie hot chocolate is vegan, free from refined sugar, and is good for you.
Since I’ve been a grown up I’ve never really had a taste for milk chocolate: dark chocolate has always been my thing. This drink is dark chocolate in a mug. It’s lighter than your average mug of cocoa because it’s made with water not plant milk. You get that chocolate hit, and it satisfies a sugar craving, but without the heaviness of a milky hot chocolate.
Low calorie hot chocolate ingredients
Blackstrap cocoa has just two ingredients: cocoa powder and blackstrap molasses. Blackstrap molasses is the byproduct of cane sugar production. All the nutrients of the sugar cane are concentrated in the molasses, which makes blackstrap one of the healthiest sweeteners (for a comparison of sweeteners, I’d recommend this article by Dr Greger: https://nutritionfacts.org/video/the-healthiest-sweetener/). In blackstrap cocoa you use 1 heaped teaspoon, or 10g, of blackstrap. This equates to about 8% of your daily chromium, 6% of your daily calcium, 3% of your daily copper and 10% of your daily iron requirements. All for under 30 calories.
If you’ve had blackstrap molasses before you’ll know that it is sweet with an almost liquorice flavour. Don’t let that put you off. When you combine blackstrap with cocoa you honestly can’t taste any liquorice. Plus the depth of flavour and thickness that the blackstrap brings really does make this drink fantastic. If you don’t believe me then give this recipe a go using another sweetener (such as maple syrup, coconut sugar or date syrup). I promise it’s better with blackstrap though!
If you drink dairy you may be interested to know that combining cow’s milk with your cocoa may rob you of some of the valuable antioxidants that cocoa contains (for details see: https://nutritionfacts.org/video/does-adding-milk-block-the-benefits-of-coffee/). Even more reason to make your hot chocolate with water!
This drink is so quick to make, it’s as quick as a cup of tea! Actually maybe quicker because you don’t need to brew it. Simply pour boiling water onto some cocoa powder and dollop in some blackstrap molasses. That’s it!

Yeast free: replace blackstrap molasses with coconut sugar to taste

- 1 heaped tsp blackstrap molasses
Dissolve cocoa and blackstrap molasses in boiling water. Enjoy!
